Big Change Requires Little Change

March 19, 2008 · 4 Comments

“We can do no great things, just small things with great love. It is not how much you do, but how much love you put into doing it” – Mother Teresa

I think this quote represents what we are doing quite well. We know that we cannot enact massive changes, but we also know that through small acts of love, we can really create change in meaningful ways. In some ways, our goals seem very inconsequential when compared to some of the things going on in this world, but I also know that changing one person’s life by giving a small gift of a soccer ball, a backpack, or a bigger gift of building them a house can change that person or family in ways we can’t understand.

change has to start somewhere…

postscript:
If you are interested in reading a challenging book, I strongly recommend Shane Claiborne’s
The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical . This is my second read of it, and it continues to smack me up side the head.

Hey if you’re a fan of Shane Claiborne and his book, then you should really check out the Another World is Possible DVD series. It’s a multimedia project by Shane Claiborne and Jamie Moffett (co-founders of the Simple Way) that emerged in response to their belief that things are not right in the world, and that they don’t have to stay that way. There are three DVD’s, one on war, one on poverty, and one on creation. You can find out more about them at http://www.awip.us.

Hey my name is D.O. and I posted the above comment as “Another World is Possible” (Which I’m glad you checked out). Well I’ve just got one more thing I wanted to tell you about and then I’ll leave you alone. The folks who made the AWIP DVD’s are making a feature-length documentary called “The Ordinary Radicals.” The film will address many of the negative stereotypes that are affiliated with present-day Christianity, and tell the stories of ordinary folks who are disproving these generalizations. People doing pretty amazing things, motivated by their faith. I think you should check it out. Interviews include folks like Shane Claiborne, Rob Bell, Brian McLaren, Becky Garrison, and a whole host of others. If you’d like to learn more or pre-order the DVD, check out the website at http://www.theordinaryradicals.com.

A legend (Latin, legend, “things to be read” ;) is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history and to possess certain qualities that give the tale verisimilitude. Legend, for its active and passive participants, includes no happenings that are outside the realm of “possibility”, defined by a highly flexible set of parameters, which may include miracles that are perceived as actually having happened, within the specific tradition of indoctrination where the legend arises, and within which it may be transformed over time, in order to keep it fresh and vital, and realistic.
